Vibroacoustic Therapy
VAT
What is Vibroacoustic Sound Therapy?
The term Vibroacoustic Therapy (VAT) was introduced in the 1980s by the Norwegian therapist and educator, Olav Skille, who found that audio waves in the range of 30Hz-120Hz transmitted through the vibroacoustic device have a very positive effect on various systems of the body.
Vibroacoustic Sound Therapy (VAT) is an evidence-based treatment that uses sound and vibrations to reduce stress, relieve pain, restore balance and enhance the quality of life. VAT frequencies range between 30Hz and 120Hz and are applied directly to the body through a custom table with transducers embedded within. During the Vibroacoustic Therapy process, a client lies on the specially designed mat with transducers which transmit specific computer-generated frequencies into vibrations.
Since the human body is over 70% water and since sound travels 5 times more efficiently through water than through air, sound frequency stimulation directly into the body is a highly efficient means for total body stimulation at a deep cellular level.
What is Vibroacoustic Sound Therapy used for?
Vibroacoustic Sound Therapy has been studied by researchers worldwide including the National Institutes of Health (NIH). NIH reports the benefits of using VAT for Parkinson’s, PTSD, anxiety, physical injuries, brain function, COPD, Asthma and much more. Most clients use VAT to reduce stress and anxiety, help with insomnia, provide natural pain relief and mitigate the impact of conventional cancer treatment.
What should I expect at my Vibroacoustic Sound Therapy visit?
You will begin to feel the gentle vibrational frequencies through the table and hear the soothing music through headphones. Abstract thinking slows and body and mind awareness expands. Some people experience a dream-like, or deep meditative state. Others fall asleep, report seeing colors, experience clarity and new insight and feel relief of pain or symptoms. The impact of your session is usually long lasting. Your body will experience deep relaxation similar to a full night’s sleep, which promotes less stress during the day and sounder sleep at night.
Effects of Vibroacoustic Therapy
Are there side effects to Vibroacoustic Therapy? The answer is “yes,” if you think of side effects being positive responses. In today’s world we are taught to think of side effects as being negative. This has been ingrained in us due to the numerous negative side effects associated with both pharmaceutical and over-the-counter drugs. But Vibroacoustic Therapy has no known negative side effects and numerous positive effects.
A few of the positive responses to Vibroacoustic Therapy may include:
Lower Blood Pressure
Reduced Pain
Reduced Anxiety
Better Regulated Limbic System
Increased Circulation
Shortened Healing Periods
Increased Sleep Quality
Increased Sense of Calm
7 Health Benefits of Vibroacoustic Therapy
When Vibroacoustic Therapy is used in conjunction with other modalities, such as essential oils, Reiki, Massage Therapy and others, this creates “Sensory Resonance”, where the individual is bathed in harmonic frequencies that integrate the whole brain and body into a state of peace and calm. When the mind and body are in a calm state, all kinds of health benefits can occur.
1. The Limbic System is signaled to return to a calm state, and over time helps the body to become better at self-regulation and more resilient to stressors.
2. The Relaxation Response is activated, which creates a cascade of positive physical and emotional health benefits.
3. The heart rate slows and heart rate variability (HRV) improves, which is an indicator of stress resilience.
4. Blood pressure lowers, which reduces the risk of stroke and heart attack.
5. Muscles relax, which in turn can reduce pain from tension and spasms.
6. Pain lessens through a combination of increased relaxation and an increase of “happy” hormones.
7. Circulation increases, which nourishes the cells and organs.
How can Vibroacoustic Therapy Help You?
Vibrational healing and sound frequencies do not diagnose medical conditions, nor do they cure or heal diseases. However, as a noninvasive, energy-based alternative health approach to wellness, Vibroacoustic Therapy has been used for over 40 years to successfully treat patients with chronic and acute pain, neurological issues including stroke rehabilitation and Parkinson’s Disease, COPD and various other lung problems including asthma and for faster recovery from surgeries including knee and hip replacements.
In a day when people are seeking healthy alternatives for combating stress, pain, and illness, we should reconsider the Ancient wisdom of vibro-tactile input. Modern technology now makes it possible for this healing modality to be put into practice and available to a wider population.
How shall I schedule my Vibroacoustic Sound Therapy treatments?
Research shows best results occur with cumulative sessions for between 10-12 weeks. We recommend a minimum treatment schedule of 8 weeks for the majority of cases, either once or twice per week. Clients usually notice a difference in their situation after 1-3 sessions.
Who should not receive Vibroacoustic Therapy?
• Individuals with Pacemakers
• People with very low blood pressure
• People with a DVT, bleeding disorder, or recent surgery
• Individuals who have had a recent psychotic episode
